Green IT
The publizer® is a web-based content management solution (CMS for short) with a focus on content marketing and publishing. In order to develop and operate such software, hardware resources and electricity are required.
The aim of GreenIT is to minimize the environmental impact of the use of IT. This can be achieved through various methods, such as energy efficiency, reducing resource consumption and promoting sustainability.
In the context of our headless CMS solution, Green IT can represent a number of requirements:
- Energy efficiency: The servers on which the SaaS applications run should be energy efficient. This can be achieved through technologies such as server virtualization and dynamic power management.
- Reducing resource consumption: This can be achieved by minimizing the number of physical servers through virtualization. In addition, using less energy-intensive cooling methods and optimizing software to require fewer computing resources can also help.
- Sustainability: SaaS solution providers should strive to use renewable energy sources and minimize their carbon footprint. This can be achieved by purchasing green electricity and participating in carbon offset programs.
- Endpoint Optimization: SaaS applications should be designed to run efficiently on endpoints to minimize energy consumption. This can be achieved through efficient code optimization and minimizing data transmission.
- Data management: The data stored in SaaS applications should be managed efficiently to minimize storage requirements and reduce the amount of energy needed to store and retrieve data.
- Lifecycle management: Providers should have a plan for the entire lifecycle of their hardware, from procurement to disposal. This should include the use of environmentally friendly materials, recycling programs and minimizing waste.
- Compliance and certifications: Compliance with standards and certifications, such as the EU energy label, ENERGY STAR or TCO certification, can help demonstrate the environmental friendliness of a SaaS solution.
It is important to note that the meaning of Green IT goes beyond these technical aspects and also has an ethical dimension. We are therefore not only aware of the impact of our activities on the environment, but we are constantly striving to minimize it.
We are therefore proud that we have already achieved many successes in our efforts to offer an environmentally friendly and sustainable SaaS solution. Our continuous work on improving our processes and systems has reached milestones, which we would like to explain in more detail in the following sections.
Effective hardware in-house and in the data center
In software development, we consistently rely on state-of-the-art, energy-efficient hardware components. From the 80 PLUS-certified power supply units to the processors and monitors, we do everything we can to optimize our energy consumption and thus reduce our carbon footprint.
But this is only one part of our green IT strategy. Our data center in central Germany is a pioneer in terms of sustainability. It uses the latest technological developments to ensure maximum energy efficiency while offering first-class performance.
Energy-efficient software architecture
The increasing amount of data being exchanged over the internet can both lengthen loading times and significantly increase power consumption. That's why we committed to building our browser-based application to the latest standards right from the start. This strategic decision has enabled us to reduce the amount of data to be processed and sent to an absolute minimum. This not only enables a smooth and efficient user experience, but also contributes to our overall goal of minimizing our energy consumption and reducing our environmental footprint.

Green electricity for the last mile
Despite extensive optimizations in our software architecture and in hosting the various components of our publizer® solution, we have unfortunately not yet succeeded in completely eliminating electricity consumption. Nevertheless, we are actively committed to minimizing the environmental impact of our activities.
Even in the development phase of our software, we only use electricity from renewable energy sources. But we go one step further: when choosing our hosting provider, we not only paid attention to their data protection standards (ISO-27001), but also to the fact that they source their electricity for the data center exclusively from 100% certified green electricity.
In this way, we ensure that every phase of our work - from the first line of code to the provision of our services to users - is in line with our green values and our commitment to sustainability.
